Eurotunnel, Folkestone

9kWp off-grid solar & LED lighting project for Eurotunnel’s new welcome
sign at the M20 freight services entrance. The 1st off-grid system in the EU using Aquion batteries. After a lengthy tender process ESS designed an autonomous solar power and battery system to provide power to the sign 365 days a year using the Aquion SP30 AHi salt water batteries.

The installation was installed in challenging conditions on a site with difficult access beside a busy motorway. ESS developed the power supply system in conjunction with the sign designers whilst adhering to strict planning conditions limiting brightness and operational hours at the road side. The 48V system is purely DC with power from the PV array being directly stored in the batteries to supply the LED's.

Strawbale Self-build, West Kent

8kWp solar &12kWh Aquion battery installation for a self build eco-house project in West Kent. ESS installed an 8kW PV system in 2015 for this eco-project with import/export monitoring. This allowed us to build up a detailed understanding of the site loads  and generation profile to see how much battery storage would be useful in future. Eco materials were an important choice for the project and Aquion batteries were chosen for their Cradle To Cradle certification and safety features. Even the electrical intake cupboard has a living roof!

The system is grid connected but will automatically switch to being fully off-grid in a power cut. The design uses a 48V Victron Quattro controller with full online monitoringand allows for wind turbine and generator connections to make the site completely independent in future. The floor was specially deigned to accommodate the weight of the Aquion battery bank which has been housed in a wooden enclosure.

The system is currently providing 95% of the site's power requirement during the sunnier months. The aim is to optimise this further to make the site 100% renewable for as much of the year as possible. 

Woodland Farm - Off Grid

6kWp solar & AGM battery projectfor a remote woodland home near Canterbury. ESS designed an East/West PV system to meet the house loads with back up from the existing diesel generator using a 48V SMA Sunny Island charge controller with full online monitoring.
Our clients said - After a lot of consultation ESS installed a 6kW PV system with battery storage to supplement our diesel generator. We’re off grid so our power supply is critical. The information we got from ESS was very detailed and the installation has been working very well. We hardly use our generator between March and September and the savings on diesel are enormous. New Barn - Off Grid

Solar PV & Aquion battery projectfor an off-grid barn conversion near Brighton. The system was sized to meet the temporary site loads at the early stages of the build using a 48V Victron system and 12kWh of Aquion batteries with back up from the existing diesel generator. The solar/battery system has reduced the site diesel consumption by c.63% as well as making it much quieter. The project is designed to be easily expanded as the build grows with additional solar, battery and generator capacity planned for the future.

Grid connected sites can see how much power is imported and exported and when power could be used more efficiently. Off-grid systems with good GSM coverage can be remotely monitored for trouble shooting and remote upgrades.
